When I first noticed my stepkids needed quite a bit of guidance to play outside, I saw an incredible opportunity to help them unlock their imaginations.
Before smartphones took over, "go play" was a complete sentence. Kids knew exactly what to do. But today, if you take away a screen, you are often met with a blank stare. Their "imagination muscles" are atrophying, and they are growing up as anxious, timid squirrels addicted to passive entertainment, instead of the bold, confident lions they were created to be.
When I set out to fix this in my own home, I learned a hard truth about the modern parenting internet: there are so many crafts out there that the overwhelm is real. Worse, they come with intense "Pinterest-perfect" pressure, often requiring a trip to the craft store, fifty dollars in supplies, and hours of prep.
I wanted to give families something they could do easily with the materials they had on hand. I wanted to create a space where the entire family could build memories together. Most importantly, I wanted to give them the tools to rebuild their imaginations, not just busy work or a distraction.
Here is the story of how we built the Planet Fassa Activities, why we brought in the educational experts, and how we ensure these activities aren't just a distraction, but a blueprint for multi-generational adventure.
The Experts: Why We Partnered with Retired Teachers
I knew the stories inside The Fassa Tails books weren't enough on their own. Kids needed a bridge between the vibrant world inside a book and the physical world in their living rooms.
But as a former corporate communication consultant and a self-proclaimed "Nailed It" crafter, I knew my limits. If this platform was going to truly help families, it had to be backed by science and real-world educational experience.
To build the foundation of our activity database, I brought in the heavy hitters: retired teachers. I specifically sought out veteran educators who had spent decades in the classroom. They have a profound, hard-earned understanding of how a child’s brain works, what holds their attention, and what they need to thrive developmentally.
Together, we looked at the massive gap between mindless screen time and high-pressure, expensive crafts. We decided to fill that gap with activities that were scientifically designed to foster growth but designed to be completely stress-free for regular parents.
The Core Framework: Heart, Mind, and Body
All activities in Fassa Tails Books and the Planet Fassa resources are created using a thorough developmental filter. The teachers and I knew that to help a child become a full, well-rounded person, you have to engage them holistically. Every activity we created is purposefully designed to target one (or more) of these three pillars:
Heart (Emotional Intelligence)
Activities designed to build empathy, self-awareness, and deep connection. These prompts help kids identify their feelings and build the emotional resilience needed to navigate the world confidently.
Mind (Cognitive Growth)
Kids are incredibly bright, and they deserve to be challenged. Our activities move beyond passive consumption and force kids to problem-solve, think critically, and flex their creative muscles.
Body (Physical Development)
We are losing our kids to the couch. These activities get kids moving, reconnecting them with their physical selves by developing both fine and gross motor skills.
The Secret Ingredient: Multi-Generational Adventure
This is where Planet Fassa truly breaks away from the rest of the internet. While many of our activities are designed to spark independent play, a large portion of our database is intended to bring the whole family into the mix.
We are creating shared experiences. We are not creating busywork.
We worked with our educators to design activities that bridge the generational gap. We want grandparents, parents, teenagers, and toddlers all laughing over the same ridiculous challenge or working together on a simple, messy project. Whether it’s acting out a goofy scene inspired by Rocky the dog from The Fassa Tails or tackling a backyard obstacle course, the goal is to create an adventure.
When multiple generations engage in play together, you aren't just entertaining a child for the afternoon. You are building a vault of core family memories. You are showing your kids that adults can be silly, that it is okay to make mistakes, and that the best kind of fun doesn't come from a screen—it comes from each other.
The "Regular Mom" Guarantee
While the retired teachers ensured every activity was packed with developmental purpose, I was there to provide the reality check.
I instituted the "Regular Mom Rule." For an activity to make it into our database, it had to be simple. It had to be easy. It could not require a massive shopping list. It had to use things parents already have lying around the house. The purpose isn't to add a high-pressure chore to your weekend. The purpose is to use technology as a launchpad - you log in, get a fun, expert-backed idea, and immediately log off to go play in the real world. I also wanted kids to see that you don’t need to buy things to have fun or create an experience - that rolled up sock could be the best indoor basketball ever!
The True Outcome: A Family That Actually Likes Each Other
When you pair a challenging, respectful children's book with a purposefully designed, multi-generational activity, something magical happens. Technology stops being a babysitter and becomes a resource.
I am living proof of this method. I used this exact "screen-lite," intentional approach with my own three stepkids. They went from kids who didn’t know how to play to leading epic playdates with large groups of friends, all centered on imaginative play. Today, they are thriving, highly successful adults who actually like spending time with my husband and me. Our adult kids still chase us down to go on family vacations together. We built a family unit rooted in real connection, shared adventures, and intentional memories.
Every activity in Planet Fassa was built with one singular purpose: to give you back your time and joy as a parent, to challenge your child's brilliant mind and grow their imagination muscle, and to help fill your home—and the streets—with laughter again.
